Nenahlmi Lagoon - Seymour Inlet BC

Nenahlmai Lagoon  is one of those "end of the world" places. Located near the "Dogleg" of Seymour inlet, south of Wawatle Bay, is a tidal lagoon protected by a narrow, shallow and fast flowing rapids. Inside the rapids the inlet opens to the three arms of Bamford, Nenahlmai and McKinnon Lagoons. Avoiding the charted 0.5 meter shoal, anchor just outside the narrows with a stern tie to the northwest shore.

Do not attempt to transit the narrows in a cruising boat. The bottom is shallow and littered with large boulders. The broken trees along the shoreline of the narrows where caused by the rigging of a prawn boat and a crab boat which on two separate occasions attempted to enter the lagoons and "fish where no man had fished before". Both ended up holed and laying over on their sides in the rapids with their rigging tangled in the forest.

The broken trees resulted as the tug Vulture dragged the stricken vessels off of the rocks and out of the rapids. If you enter in a skiff make sure you can make sufficient speed to get out against the current or you may end up cooling your heels inside for a few hours. From the north shore of Nenahlmai Lagoon an old road grade leads about one mile to an abandoned gold mine. An old tractor parked in the bushes at the shoreline marks the beginning of the road. It may be hard to find.

We have been here a number of times and each time the lagoons have provided a good day's worth of poking around.

A tidy little island in the middle of the lagoons is a nice place to have lunch

The lagoon entrance can be difficult to buck-in through when it is running, even in a fast skiff. The current is quite swift at times and there is a ledge at the inner end of the narrows that you could whack an outboard on at lower levels of the tide so you can't just run through on plane.  Tidal predictions for the entrance rapids are in the tide book. Tidal range inside the lagoons is very small.
